About the Committee:
The Social, Cultural, and Humanitarian Committee (SOCHUM), is the Third Committee of the United Nations General Assembly. SOCHUM is tasked with dealing with issues surrounding social, humanitarian, and human rights issues from around the world. H-MUN delegates participating in SOCHUM will need to collaborate and engage in lively debate to address one of the most pressing humanitarian issues, the Uyghur Muslim crisis. The Uyghur minority are a Turkic ethnic group originating from and culturally affiliated with the general region of Central and East Asia. Currently, there are over three million Uyghur people being held in concentration camps in Xinjiang province. Delegates in this committee will debate and discuss their treatment in the camps in China, and find ways to resolve the situation while bearing in mind the political, humanitarian, and social landscapes of the issue.
